MIRI: The fishermen who operate stalls selling their catches near the Sri Bima Maritime Training Centre in Lutong have called on the authorities concerned to connect piped water to the area for their use.

According to Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Miri chairman Yeo Kian Leong, the fishermen currently have to transport water to their stalls, which have existed for many years, for daily use.

“The fishermen have requested for piped water to be installed there from the relevant authorities. However, until today, there has been no feedback,” he said yesterday when Amanah Piasau and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Miri presented bottled drinking water to the fishermen.

Yeo cited the example of such a facility for fishermen’s stalls at Kampung Batu Satu.

“Residents from Miri regularly come over to buy there and without water they will face difficulties in washing their hands,” he said.

“The fishermen can afford to pay the water bill as it is needed daily by them and if this continues it will further burden them.”

Amanah would contact the Public Works Department to request they send a water tanker to supply clean water to the fishermen.
