MIRI: The haze is back once more as dry weather persists in Miri, with firefighters deployed to battle the spread of wildfires in plantations at Kuala Baram.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong told The Borneo Post that wildfires are currently raging in areas owned by two development consortiums in Kuala Baram.

“It has become somewhat of a common sight now, especially during the dry season. When it become dry, people start to clear their land by burning,” he said.

Making the situation worse is the low water level due to the persistent dry season, with strong winds also aggravating the blaze and causing the fire to spread.

The fire has caused slight haze since morning and was visibly more serious as of 2.20pm today.

“Our department has received public complaints about open burning that are causing these spates of wildfires.

Teams from the department have been deployed to combat the blaze.

Since January, Law has been reminding the public to refrain from carrying out any open burning in an effort to reduce the haze.
