MIRI: People are flocking to Kampung Batu Satu fisherman market for the inaugural Bubuk Festival organised by Miri City Council (MCC).

Mayor Adam Yii who launched the festival yesterday said the council plans to make the festival one of the signature tourism events for the city during krill season.

“The bubuk festival held today was planned at the last minute. After seeing the good response from the villagers and members of public, the council is going to have a grand festival next year,” he told the media.

Such events would also help generate side income for the villagers who were seen  selling homemade krill products.

To beautify the beach area of the market by Kuala Baram’s roadside, he revealed that MCC plans to develop the area with beach recreational infrastructure.

“Once such recreational infrastructure is in place it would help uplift the area’s tourism value.”

A local hawker Siti Hawa Razali gave her thumbs up to the Bubuk festival which attracted more people including tourists to the market.

“The bubuk or krill season normally starts in January and lasts for two months. This is the time for us (the women) to make extra income by producing krill related food products such as belacan, cencaluk (fermented krill), krill cracker, dry krills and others.”

During the festival, there was demonstration on catching krill, making of belacan, promotion and sale of homemade krill products.

Also present were deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad, secretary Morshidi Fredrick and standing committee for tourism development chairman councillor Warziedea Ahmad.
