KUCHING: A new coalition is likely to be announced today, said a PKR assemblyman aligned to the party’s deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

Pemanis assemblyman Chong Fat Full said in a Malay Mail report that the new coalition would replace the current Pakatan Harapan (PH).

“This is not the first time discussions took place regarding the new coalition. It has been discussed for quite some time.

“The new coalition will be named Perikatan Nasional, and would include several leaders from DAP, Amanah (Parti Amanah Negara), GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak), Umno and PAS,” Chong was quoted as saying by MalayMail when met by reporters at the Sheraton Hotel in Petaling Jaya before a meeting with several Azmin-aligned PKR members today.

However, he said this was pending meetings still being held as of press time.

Chong clarified that earlier reports about Azmin-aligned PKR members leaving the party were untrue.

“Those aligned to Azmin have no intention to leave the party. We will remain with the party until and if we are sacked by party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said, adding that they still supported Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

According to him, if these members are sacked by the party, they will either join existing political parties like Parti Gerakan or form a new party.

“The meetings that are taking place today are the result of Friday night’s decision made during the PH presidential council.

“Most likely something happened during the meeting which pushed Dr Mahathir to take these actions,” he said.

Chong also confirmed the Prime Minister’s meeting with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at 6pm.

He said a press conference would probably be called at 8.30pm, but he did not reveal where the press conference would be held.

Some 20 luxury vehicles believed to be carrying senior political leaders arrived at the Istana Negara this evening, amid raging speculations that a new alliance government may be formed to replace Pakatan Harapan.

Two news portals posted videos of the arrivals of these vehicles at the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s residence on Twitter.
