MIRI: The authorities have been called on to investigate the fires on private land in Kuala Baram and Pujut, which have resulted in hazey conditions with debris and foul smells affecting residents here.

Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) Sarawak commissioner Jofri Jaraiee stressed action must be taken if the fires were deliberately set to expand their farms.

“If the fires are not controlled in Kuala Baram and Pujut, the people of Miri will be facing choking haze,” he complained.

He pointed out that the thick smoke caused by bushfires in Kuala Baram and Pujut had affected Desa Senadin, Tudan, Permyjaya, Pujut, Piasau, and even the city centre.

“Let us safeguard the health and safety of ourselves and the public from unwanted things that could jeopardise the health and safety of the people,” he said.

While calling for enforcement agencies to work around the clock to monitor the situation, Jofri said all parties, including plantations and private land owners, also need to cooperate on the issue.
