MIRI: The relevant authorities are urged to regularly monitor Sungai Niah here to ensure that the marine life, especially shrimps, will not become extinct due to poisoning by some irresponsible people.

According to Kpg Padang Niah headman Fauzi Ali, Sungai Niah is well-known for shrimps, but some irresponsible people would use poison to harvest them (shrimps) for sale when they are in season.

“I am asking the state government through the relevant departments and authorities to take immediate action to address the problem of irresponsible individuals who have poisoned the shrimps at Sungai Niah.

Their actions are affecting the fishermen’s income. It could also lead to the extinction of shrimps in the river. Awareness programme on the importance of conservation and river preservation should also be held here regularly, he said when contacted yesterday.

Fauzi added that the poisoning of the shrimp had been going on for so long, ‘but it is worse now because the price of prawns has gone up’.
