Abang Johari (seated, second left) has reiterated that GPS will not compromise the state’s rights in the current political situation.

KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will not compromise on Sarawak rights in the current political imbroglio affecting the country, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In a brief statement issued today, Abang Johari assured that any decision taken by the state government will be in the interest of the nation and would not sacrifice the rights and interests of Sarawak.

“The most important concern is that Malaysia must have the political stability in order for the nation to move forward,” the statement read.

“The country is faced with mounting economic problems arising from uncertainties including the Covid-19 outbreak that must be addressed in earnest and expeditiously.”

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has been meeting all 222 Members of Parliament one after another over a two-day period to determine who has the support to lead the new government or if indeed, a fresh election is necessary.

This comes after Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigned yesterday as Prime Minister. He was then appointed by the King as interim prime minister, pending the appointment of a new premier.

Abang Johari went on to say that GPS would abide by any decision taken by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to solve the impasse, based on Article 40(2)(a) and (b), Article 43(2)(a) and Article 55(2) to be read together as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

To a question on the decision by GPS who unanimously chose Dr Mahathir over Anwar Ibrahim, Abang Johari said the King had appointed the former as the Interim Prime Minister and thus there was no need to create chaos in the country.

“It is the stability which is important and the people must come first,” he said.
