KUCHING: Sarawak recorded an encouraging Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) 2019 result when 96 of its candidates achieved Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.00.
Sarawak Education director Dr Azhar Ahmad said this represented an increase from 92 candidates in 2018, and 1,913 candidates out of 5,837 candidates who sat for the exam last year received a CGPA of 3.00 and above.
“One candidate, Yak Fang Ling from SMK Sungai Merah in Sibu, a special needs student (visually impaired), obtained an outstanding result,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He added that the student had been invited to attend the National STPM 2019 Student Excellence Award at the Malaysian Examination Council yesterday.
Altogether, 22 secondary schools in Sarawak achieved excellent STPM results with a CGPA of over 2.80, said Azhar.
These schools are SMK Bako, Kuching; SMK Chung Hua, Sibu; SMK Sacred Heart, Sibu; SMK Methodist, Sibu; SMK Bandar Sibu, Sibu; SMK Kampung Nangka, Sibu; SMK Sungai Merah, Sibu; SMK Tung Hua, Sibu; SMK Merbau, Miri and SMK Lutong, Miri.
In addition, Azhar said SMK Pusa, Betong; SMK Green Road, Kuching; SMK St. Anthony, Sarikei; SMK Asajaya, Samarahan; SMK Batu Lintang, Kuching; SMK Meradong (A), Meradong; SMK Meradong (B), Meradong; SMK Saribas, Saribas; SMK Batu Kawa, Padawan; SMK Pending, Kuching; and SMK Chung Hua, Miri also recorded encouraging STPM results.
A total of 5,837 candidates sat for the STPM examination in Sarawak last year, versus 5,479 candidates in 2018; and 5,824 (99.78 per cent) were school candidates, while 13 (0.22 per cent) were private candidates.
“Overall, 5,494 people or 98.07 per cent of the school candidates received STPM certificates in 2019, compared with 5,191 candidates (98.37 per cent) the previous year.
“Out of the total candidates, 24 candidates (0.43 per cent) sat for five subjects, 3,741 (66.78 per cent) sat for four subjects, 945 (16.87 per cent) sat for three subjects, 485 (8.66 per cent) took two subjects (two per cent), while 299 candidates (5.34 per cent) took one subject. Meanwhile, the CGPA for Sarawak’s 2019 STPM results is 2.66,” he said.
In terms of achievement in the subjects, Azhar said there was significant improvement in 2019.
“There has been a significant improvement in the students’ performance in 2019 compared to the previous year. Six of the 21 subjects taken by the candidates showed encouraging results; namely Mandarin, Malay Communicative Literature, Chemistry, Mathematics (T), Biology and Physics,” he said.
Meanwhile, the STPM 2019 results for the school candidates had been sent to all principals, while the private candidates would receive their results via post.
Azhar also said STPM 2019 candidates could review their results by typing STPM <space> Result <space> Identification Card Number, and send via SMS to 15888.
