MIRI: The Sarawak government is actively upgrading internet coverage across the state, including in rural areas, to enable the people to make full use of the integrated services provided at its one-stop centre, Service Sarawak.

In stating this, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the government through Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) is currently upgrading telecommunication towers to extend internet coverage.

“We are upgrading towers in rural areas such as Long San which now has the (internet) services except for the speed.

“We need to increase the (internet) speed and then link here – the one-stop centre – and once done, this means the services can also be obtained in Long San,” he told reporters after launching Service Sarawak Miri Centre, at UTC Miri yesterday.

Also present were Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting, State Secretary Datuk Amar Jaul Samion, Sarawak Information System Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Miri Resident Mastapa Julaihi and Mayor Adam Yii.

On Service Sarawak, Abang Johari said it is a service provided by the Sarawak government using information digitalisation technology.

“The system is integrated and is connected to all government agencies and this is where we receive information such as utility bills and other services such as the Land and Survey through the Lasis application.

“This is part of our digital economy efforts whereby government agencies are centralised in one system which can be retrieved by the people, provided there is speed and internet,” he said.

The launching of Service Sarawak Miri Centre is another achievement of the Sarawak Civil Service Action Plan 2010-2020 with the commitment to transform the state civil service to be more effective in its service delivery.

Meanwhile, a statement issued to the press in connection with the event said the Service Sarawak Kuching Centre at UTC Sarawak, which started Oct 1, 2018, has recorded transactions totalling 442,591 with collection of RM389 million as of Feb 25 this year.

Service Sarawak Sibu Centre and Miri Centre, which began operating on Oct 7 last year, recorded 140,660 transactions worth RM34 million and 112,550 transactions worth RM36 million, respectively, as of Feb 26.
