Anwar steps aside, endorses Dr Mahathir as PM representing PH coalition

KUCHING: PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim looks to be giving up the race to be the country’s next prime minister after he announced that Pakatan Harapan (PH) is supporting Interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a candidate for the premiership.

In a post on his official Facebook page today, Anwar said that while he was touched by the actions of those supporting him, he would place the interests of the country above his own.

“I was present at the Istana Negara today to submit a letter stating the change of PH’s stance regarding the candidates for the next prime minister, and the party has named Dr Mahathir as a candidate, representing the party,” the post read.

The current power struggle enveloping the nation has resulted in numerous twists and turns over the last 24 hours.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had reportedly stepped up for the party as one of the candidates for the post of prime minister, while Dr Mahathir had also offered himself as a candidate to be the next prime minister.

Anwar himself had said last night that he had the numbers to command a majority in the Dewan Rakyat, alluding to the one-on-one interviews the King had with MPs to find out who they preferred as prime minister to end the current political crisis.
