BETONG: The collapse of Pakatan Harapan government is a valuable  lesson for Sarawakians on the importance of choosing the right leaders.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said a government could survive numerous challenges when experienced and good leaders were at the helm, stressing that a government
would be unshakable with such leaders.

“Let the current national political situation, where the federal government has fallen apart due to new inexprienced leaders and the jostlings for power and position, be a lesson to all of us. We must have strong committed leaders whose struggle are for the state and people.

“Our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is a very experienced leader. He has been in politics for over 40 years and he is competently supported by his team of multi racial ministers who themselves are not only very experienced but  hardworking as well,” he said.

Uggah who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, mentioned these when officiating at
the Bukit Saban constituency-level Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) for Kubal Ili at Rh Langan, Nanga Mara, Layar here yesterday.

He also called on all Sarawakians to continue to support Abang Johari’s GPS government, as this is crucial for Sarawak to protect its rights and wealth as enshrined
in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

He nonetheless warned the people that each election time, they would be approached by political parties including those from outside, who would said their candidates would make good leaders.

“A strong  leader alone is not enough. He must be supported by an equally strong and  stable party or coalition.

“To me too, there is no need to change your leaders if they  can still deliver. It’s like a farmer not chopping down a durian tree if it continues to produce good harvest every fruiting seasons,” he said.

Uggah added a great  majority of Sarawakians had made the right choice by supporting local political parties in the last election.

He hoped that voters, especially the rural folk, would continue to give GPS their fullest support during the coming state election.

“Thus, Sarawak through GPS has remained very strong and united. It has been able to pursue its development and finance generating agendas and programmes very well.

“These are all for the people’s benefits,” he said.

Meanwhile, Betong member of parliament Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat who also spoke said Sarawak did the right thing in forming the GPS.

“Through GPS Sarawak can chart out its own development agenda without having to refer  to others, in particular those from outside the state. In Abang Johari too the state has a visionary leader who knows how to source for extra fund for its developmental purposes,” he said.

He added the PH government had won the 2018 general elections based on many promises, but many of them had not been fulfilled.

He advised the people to reject political parties from outside the state as their leaders would not have real knowledge of local grievances and aspirations.

A political secretary to the chief minister Dr Richard Rapu was among those present at the function.
