SARIKEI: As host of the 48th Inter-Division Schools Athletics Championships, Sarikei has received a push to make full use of home ground advantage to be crowned overall champion.

The meet will be held at the Sarikei Sports Complex from March 2 to 5.

The hosts have set a target of 25 gold, 30 silver and 30 bronze medals to try to achieve just that.

The challenge was issued by Sarikei District Education Officer Lau Ngie Tung when he handed over the flag to the Sarikei contingent at the Sports Complex last Friday.

He and SMK St Anthony’s principal Vincent Liong, who are joint head of the Sarikei squad, believe the target is achievable.

They announced incentives of RM30 for a gold medal, RM20 (silver) and RM10 (bronze) to the Sarikei athletes.

Last year, Sarikei Division collected a total of 304.83 points from 18 gold, 25 silver and 17 bronze to emerge runner-up behind Miri Division which garnered 595.5 points.

Meanwhile, Lau thanked Sarikei MP Andrew Wong Ling Biu and Meradong assemblyman Ding Kuong Hiing for their strong support.

Wong had extended financial assistance to help cover the cost of staging this year’s State Championships and also part of the expenses to send the Sarawak contingent to the National Championships to be held in Selangor.

Lau and Liong have also been appointed as chef-de-mission for the State contingent.

Senior education officers, principals and headmasters, athletes and officials were also present during the handing over ceremony.
