KUCHING: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s swearing in yesterday as the eighth Prime Minister will unlikely be the end to the country’s political turmoil, opined two political analysts.
Prof Dr James Chin, who is director of the Asia Institute, University of Tasmania, said this is because Pakatan Harapan (PH) could still show its dissatisfaction with the new prime minister.
“PH can pass a vote of no confidence at the Parliament sitting in March,” he said when contacted.
The next Parliament sitting is scheduled for March 9 to April 16.
Fellow political analyst Prof Dr Jayum Jawan Empaling also believes PH is likely to bring up a vote of no confidence.
“I am certain PH will bring up a vote of no confidence come March 9, to see for real if the new prime minister has the majority.
“That is the only and real place to establish whether a person appointed as prime minister has the support of the majority,” he said when contacted.
Jayum pointed out that if Muhyiddin has the support, the vote of confidence will merely reinforce his grip on the leadership.
While noting that for the political impasse is settled for now he said, “it is not the end of it yet”.
A statement from Istana Negara yesterday said Muhyiddin will be sworn in this morning.
The statement said Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah decreed that the appointment process for the premiership can no longer be delayed for the good of the nation and its people.
