SIBU: Sarawak is eyeing both the men’s and women’s volleyball gold medals at the Johor Malaysia Games (Sukma).

Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) High Performance Sports manager Andre Richard said the Sarawak squad have at least three to four players of high calibre.

“I see this as a good sign and powered by a team of committed players with steely determination, we are confident of lifting both titles at stake,” he added.

Andre was here to officiate the closing of the three-day volleyball training workshop held at Sibu Volleyball Stadium yesterday.

With him were Sibu Volleyball Association president Dr William Ting and chairman Dato Moh Wung Ming.

Andre, who is from New Zealand, said he was working hard to raise the standard up another notch.

“Overall, the team comprising of players from Kuching, Sarikei, Miri, Limbang and Sibu are committed and we are going to prove other people wrong by producing the results,” he said.

He said many had written them off but that was not to be the case as the Sarawak Volleyball Association has a good coaching team that could make things happen.

The Sukma players had undergone four assessment tests.

In the six months before the Sukma they would focus on physical conditioning and muscle recovery.

Meanwhile, Andre disclosed that a high performance sport centre will be set up in Kuching in November this year.

“It will be a centre that provides the strength conditioning of the players, psychology, anti-doping, public gym – and everything under one roof,” he said.

It can accommodate 500 athletes at any one time.
