KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) could rethink its support for the new federal government if the latter is not what it is expected to be in relation to Sarawak’s interests, opined a political analyst Professor Dr Jayum Jawan Empaling.

“Asking is begging. Let Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin offer and if it is not enough, then rethink support.

“It has come a time that talk is of little currency nowadays,” he said when asked to comment on what Sarawak could ask or demand from the new prime minister and the coming new Cabinet administration.

On whether the state government would have a better chance in pushing the state’s demands if there are GPS members in the federal Cabinet, Jayum said numbers do not matter.

“During Barisan Nasional (BN)’s period, Sarawak had six ministers in the federal Cabinet.

“What have they really done or achieved for Sarawak then?” he questioned.

On Monday, GPS parliamentary chief whip Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that the coalition has not had any discussion on posts in the federal Cabinet with Muhyiddin, as GPS’ priority was to restore the political stability of the country while protecting Sarawak’s interests.

Fadillah informed that GPS MPs and leaders have given Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg the mandate to decide whether they should have posts in the new federal Cabinet.

“GPS will also continue negotiations on Sarawak’s rights to be expedited under the new prime minister. GPS fight to reclaim Sarawak’s rights and interests will continue to be our priority,” he was reported as saying.
