KUCHING: The postponement of the March 9 Dewan Rakyat sitting is expected of any incoming prime minister, said political analyst Dr Jayum Jawan Empaling.

“The main reason is to give the incoming prime minister time to consolidate his parliamentary support especially when that is going to be questioned and therefore put his job on the line,” he told The Borneo Post today.

Dr Jayum pointed out that the postponement is not tied to the reason that the new prime minister needs time to get a Cabinet together.

“This could be done within a day or two. And the appointment of Cabinet members could (even) have been done together when the prime minister took his oath of office before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.

He added that the reason for postponement is also not because new ministers need time to prepare answers for questions that have been submitted earlier to previous ministers.

“Ministers do not prepare any answers. They are prepared by civil servants from the respective ministries. Ministers merely read out answers,” he said.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof on Wednesday announced that it would only reconvene on May 18 instead of March 9 as scheduled before the change of government.

He was contacted by Bernama and had confirmed having received the notification on the new date last night.

“The (Dewan Rakyat) Speaker’s Office will issue a media statement soon,” he was quoting as saying by Bernama.
