KUCHING: Despite suffering from vision problems in Form 4, SMK Meradong student Jane Teng Siew Wei didn’t lose sight of her goals and scored 9As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams – using a magnifying glass to study.

The youngest child with two older siblings said it took her a year to accept her disadvantage, and resorted to using magnifying glass to aid her with reading textbooks.

“Back in Form 4, I always cried in class as I could not accept my fate. But in Form 5, I worked hard and diligently in my studies with help from teachers and my best friend,” she said when met after the SPM result announcement at the auditorium of the department off Jalan Diplomatic here today.

She added that she did not go for tuition classes as she lived in a remote area, but that did not discourage her from trying to achieve her dream of doing well in the examination.

Teng said she used a magnifying glass both in class and at home, spending up to six hours a day to read her textbooks and memorise key points.

The bright young girl said she hopes to be a teacher someday to help more students who are in the same predicament as her.

She scored A+ for Bahasa Melayu, History, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, A for Moral Studies and Bahasa Cina, A- for Biology and C+ for English.
