The 10-door longhouse was completely destroyed by an early morning fire.

BINTULU: Eighty-eight residents from 10 families at Rumah Elwin Ugan, Sungai Binyo in Sebauh were left homeless after their longhouse was razed to the ground at around 1am today.

Chairman of the Binyo, Selezu and Genaan Residents Association Francis Jalak who confirmed the incident, said most residents were not in the longhouse during the incident because some were working at the Bintulu town and other areas.

“The fire broke out so fast and the villagers could not save any of their belongings from the longhouse that they had stayed for the past three years,” he said.

It is understood that the incident has been reported by the longhouse chief at the Bintulu police station for further action.

As of press time, the cause of the fire and total loss have yet to be ascertained since most residents were not at the scene.

Fortunately, he said the fire did not result in any injuries to the affected residents.

The longhouse is located about 50 kilometres from Bintulu town which takes almost three hours to reach via Ulu Sebauh-Binyo road which still not fully completed.
