Socso pays out RM5.3 million in compensation in Sibu

SIBU: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) office here paid out RM5.3 million in compensation to contributors involved in accidents resulting in disability or death last year.

Sarawak Socso director Philip Sangkan said RM2.1 million was paid for Temporary Disability  while RM2.8 million was paid to contributors with Permanent Disability.

Socso also paid out a total of RM19,9331.02 in regular Dependent Benefit to beneficiaries of contributors who died due to work accident.

“A total of RM86,462.17 was spent for Invalidity Benefit to injured workers which prevented them from working for sustenance while RM231,949.59 was used for Survival Benefit payment,” he told reporters after handing over pension benefits and rehabilitation instruments aid to Jackson Galau, 45 at his place of stay in Bukit Lima Federal Housing Complex here yesterday.

At the time of serving in police force in 2006, Jackson suffered a stroke which caused him to be paralysed .

He lapsed into coma and needs to be taken care of fully by his family members.

In the meantime, for the first two months this year Philip said Sibu Sosco has spent RM560,597.99 on compensation payments to contributors under the Work Disaster Scheme.

Philip said it was important for employers to register
their workers with Socso to protect the welfare of their workers.

He said this is in compliance with Sections 4 and 5 of the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 for all employers eligible to register with Socso and make the required contributions.

“Our priority is to ensure that the welfare of all workers is taken care of,” he added.

Also present were Commanding officer of 10th Battalion General Operations Force Supt Sanudin Md Isa and Sibu Socso manager Tan Phang Chia.
