KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will support the proposed amendment to Article 1 (2) of the Federal Constitution if such a Bill is tabled in the next Parliament sitting, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“Actually we have discussed the amendment of Article 1(2). If it is brought to Parliament, we will support it.
“We have also suggested that Article 160 (2) be amended in terms of taxation, and the definition of the agreement which says Malaya Agreement. And we suggest it be amended to Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” he said when met by journalists after launching the state-level Fatwa seminar at the Sarawak Islamic Complex here today.
Abang Johari, who is also GPS chairman, asserted that the phrase ‘pursuant to MA63’ would no longer be required if an amendment to Article 160 (2) of the Federal Constitution was carried out.
“No need (for it) anymore because the moment you amend 160 (2), meaning that (it is) already giving force to MA63, to the content of the Constitution,” he explained.
When the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government tabled the Bill to amend Article 1 (2) of the Federal Constitution in April last year, he said they did not want to amend Article 160 (2) and because of this GPS asserted the need to include the phrase ‘pursuant to MA63’.
“If you have amended it, then no need (for it anymore) because it will be double,” said Abang Johari.
Asked whether the previous discussions pertaining to MA63 with the previous federal government would still be effective, the chief minister said what had been discussed would be carried on.
“I understand they will continue. What I got from our Senior Minister (Minister of Works Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof) (is that) they are continuing with the discussion.
“Then we want to finish it fast, and no more delay,” said Abang Johari.
He assured that the discussion would not have to start over again given that what was discussed would be carried forward as agreed.
