SIBU: A lorry driver was yesterday sentenced to death after he was found guilty by the High Court of murdering a woman working at Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) on Aug 2, 2018.

Judge Lim Hock Leng passed the sentence on Philip Uja, 44, after the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.

“Considered as a whole, the circumstantial evidence, irresistibly leads to the conclusion that the prosecution has proven its case against the accused, in relation to the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code, beyond reasonable doubt.

“The accused is accordingly convicted for the murder of Nurnia Azalea Priscilla Edward. The accused will be hung by the neck until he is dead in accordance with Section 277 of the Criminal Procedure Code,” he said.

Philip was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murdering Nurnia between 8pm on Aug 1, 2018 and 2.30pm on Aug 2, 2018 at a rented room in Tiong Hua Road.

Philip was represented by Rosli Gapor while Mohamad Arif Aizuddin Masrom was the deputy public prosecutor for the case.

Based on earlier reports, Nurnia’s body was found with her hands and feet bound.

Her friends found the body at the house in Tiong Hua Road at 2.30pm on Aug 2, 2018.

The police arrested Philip at a longhouse in Julau about 10.40am on Aug 7, 2018.
