KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has launched its no plastic straws educational campaign.

This is in line with the enforcement of its single-use plastic straw ban next month.

Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the campaign will also involve students from primary and secondary schools, as well as universities.

“Students are discouraged from going to crowded areas. So, instead of them staying at home watching TV or playing videogames, they can have some exciting things to do,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Organising chairlady Yong Li Na said the first category is the A3 Poster Drawing Contest for primary schools with the theme ‘Say No to Plastic Straw’ – where they can draw their posters using crayons or watercolour.

“The submission of the A3 sized artwork, along with the registration form must be submitted the latest by March 31. The winner will receive RM600, while the first and second runners-up will receive RM400 and RM300 respectively. Five consolation prizes of RM100 each are also up for grabs,” she said.

Under the same theme, the second category is the A3 Poster Creation Contest for secondary schools using computer software.

The champion will receive RM500, followed by RM400 and RM300 for the first and second runners-up, as well as five consolation prizes of RM100 each.

The artwork and registration form must be submitted by March 31.

The third category is the Creative Video Contest with the theme ‘Say No to Plastic’, which is open to the general public aged 18 years and above.

Participants are required to use computer software to create the video presentation.

A cash prize of RM1,000 will be given to the winner, followed by RM800 and RM600 for the first and second runners-up, while there are also five consolation prizes of RM300 each.

The submission deadline for the video along with the registration form is April 9.
