KUCHING: This year’s Spartan Race Sarawak, which is scheduled to be held at the Leadership Institute of Civil Sarawak Service at Semenggoh on April 4-5, has been postponed to September.

Spartan Malaysia said the decision was reached after much consideration and discussion with Spartan Headquarters in Boston and in accordance with the Ministry of Health.

“The Malaysian government has strongly urged that all mass gatherings should be cancelled or postponed to help prevent the spread of Covid-19,“ Spartan Malaysia said in a statement.

“A follow-up email will be sent soon with more information about the new race date to all the registrants and all registered racers will be automatically transferred to thee new event,” it added.

If the racers cannot make the new date, the deferral fee will be waived and the registrants will be given the opportunity to transfer to another Spartan Malaysia race this year.

“This has been a very tough decision for us to make, however please know that the safety of our racers, volunteers, spectators, team members, and staff is our number one priority and we strongly believe that postponing the race is the most responsible course of action during this challenging time.

“We extend our sincerest apologies for any inconveniences that this may have caused, and we thank you for your continuous understanding and support,” added Spartan Malaysia.

Meanwhile, event joint organiser Kuching Fitness Association said they would be postponing the race to a later date in the best interest of public health and safety.

“We will continue to engage with the growing Spartan community in Sarawak to maintain a high level of fitness and wellbeing for the race,” said its president Carter Wei.
