KUCHING: Sarawak has recorded five new confirmed cases of Coronavirus Disease 2019 today, bringing the total to 50, the state disaster management committee said.

It said in a statement that two of the new cases were being treated in Sarawak General Hospital, while two are in Sibu Hospital and one in Bintulu Hospital.

“Those who have come in close contact with the Covid-19 positive cases are required to contact the closest divisional health office to inform the office of their health status. Tests to confirm the virus will only be conducted on close contact who are showing symptoms after an evaluation has been made by health practitioners,” the statement said.

There are also 115 new Person Under Investigation cases, bringing the cumulative figure to 655. Of that figure, 285 are negative while the rest are pending lab results.

Yesterday, the committee announced Sarawak’s first death from Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19). The victim was a 60-year-old pastor from Emmanuel Baptist Church here, who passed away at 11am at Sarawak General Hospital.

The State Health Department is still in the process of identifying the source of his infection, and 193 close contacts of the deceased have been traced and are undergoing home- quarantine.
