KUCHING: Local Government and Housing Minister Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian has expressed his disappointment after finding out that there were still members of the public gathering at eateries around the city today despite the movement control order (MCO) put in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.

He gave an example where members of the public were seen at the Kenyalang Market Food Court this morning to have their breakfast as if as they were unaware of the MCO imposed by the government.

“(The scene is) very disappointing as we want to protect these very people from Covid-19 by practicing social distancing and temporally disrupting their life styles. Please just do take away and go home or use food or grocery delivery services such as GrabFood, Foodpanda, H&L Express and others,” he added in a statement today.

Dr Sim pointed out that everyone must cooperate to help each other in Sarawak as the state had already recorded its first Covid-19 related death.

Should any members of the public refuse to adhere to the MCO, Dr Sim reminded that the police were authorised to take necessary action and carry out arrests.

“Under the MCO, first time offenders can be jailed for up to two years and/or subject to a RM200,000 fine while second time offenders can be jailed for up to five years and/or subject to a RM200,000 fine. If you love Sarawak, let’s change our behaviour ourselves instead of letting the law change it,” he said.
