Traffic police personnel are seen advising motorists and motorcyclists to go home at a roadblock in Kota Samarahan.

KUCHING: Traffic police have set up a roadblock near the Sg Kuap Bridge linking the city to Kota Samarahan, not to catch traffic offenders but to advise motorists to return to their homes during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

Policemen were seen giving advice to both motorists and motorcyclists, telling them to return home instead of travelling to the city.

Not only did the traffic police advise the people to go home, they also appealed to them to wear face masks if they had to go out.

The roadblock in Saramahan was said to have led to a massive traffic jam but the authorities certainly hoped that the public would understand the need of making such a move.

Traffic police personnel told the media to help its enforcement team convey a strong message to the community: “Please stay at home and if you have to go out, put on a face mask.”

The authorities felt that public awareness wasn’t sufficient, even though this was the second day of the MCO, which will be enforced until March 31.

“We hope everybody would just comply with the MCO and stay at home at all times. If you have no choice but to go out, do use a face mask,” advised the police.

Thus far, Samarahan has recorded four confirmed Covid-19 cases, of which two cases were from Kampung Tanjung Bundong and one each in Kampung Sungai Empit and Simunjan.

The division also has 20 persons under investigation (PUI) for Covid-19, out of which seven had been quarantined at the Health College near Kota Sentosa and the others were under home quaratine.

It has been reported that 177 people who were in close contact with the PUI have been ordered to also self quarantine.
