Stalls at the Central Market were open as usual but the market was less crowded than usual.

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting has urged folks here to comply with the movement control order (MCO) imposed by the government in the effort to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Ting made the call after he was told of some people having breakfast at coffee shops yesterday morning and ignoring the MCO.

“Do not think you will be okay, your decision will determine how fast we can get back to normal,” he shared on his Facebook Page.

When contacted, Ting said despite the recalcitrance of a few, most people here complied with the order and stayed at home.

“I can see that many coffee shops are closed.

“It is still early stage to say I am disappointed. I am driving around the town and I see many shops are closed.

“However, there are those that did not comply. I understand that it is an old habit that is hard to break,” he said.

He also saw some of the coffee shops opened, but no chairs were provided  as they cater for delivery only.

However, he said the situation at the  Central Market was the worst as there were so many people doing business at the same time.

Early yesterday morning it was observed that some people came out early to buy necessities and groceries at the market.

Some of the stalls at the central market were closed, but many were open as usual.

Ting said the council would come up with an announcement regarding the order.

“The announcement by SMC will not be something new, but it is based on the announcement by the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister.”

On his Facebook Page, the SMC chairman also shared some pictures of the empty streets here.
