The long-distance bus terminal at Jalan Pahlawan here is quiet with no passengers to be seen.

SIBU: The Sarawak Bus Transport Company Association (SBTCA) has urged the relevant authorities to carry out sterilisation work on bus terminals.

Its advisor Lau Khing Seng said that now was the best time for sterilising bus terminals.

“This is also to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said when contacted by The Borneo Post today, adding that he had urged the government to provide sterilisation to public buses as well during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

Meanwhile, he confirmed that stage bus services in the town here would be suspended tomorrow until further notice.

He lamented the lack of passengers and Covid-19 fear among bus drivers, conductors and ticket inspectors as factors leading to the suspension of service from bus transport companies.

“There are still some stage bus service today but the service will definitely be suspended from tomorrow. As for whether or not the service will resume after the MCO, that is subjected to further notice,” Lau said.

As for long distance buses, most were not in operation today due to lack of passengers.

“Everyone stays at home, everyone doesn’t go out, there are very few passengers,” he added.

Earlier today, Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin announced that all the bus operators in Sarawak will suspend their bus services temporarily effective tomorrow.

He said this involved stage bus and regional bus services upon advice from the Health Ministry.
