Man caught after breaking into substation, two accomplices still at large

KUCHING: A man was arrested after he was caught breaking into a 33kV substation off Jalan Sungai Maong Ulu on March 19.

There were two other accomplices who were with him at the time, but they managed to escape, said Sarawak Energy Bhd in a statement.

According to the state power utilities corporation its security team went to the substation at 12.20am, following a public tip-off about a break-in at the facility.

“Upon arrival, the security team saw the three men dismantling cables.

The cut cables and some hardware tools found at the substation.

“The team apprehended one of them,” it said, adding that the suspect was later handed over to police for further investigation.

Following the arrest, Sarawak Energy said police found 15m long of 95mm armoured-core cables and 10m of protection control and instrumentation (PCI) cables on the ground and switchyard around the substation.

“They (police) also found hardware tools and a syringe on the (arrested) man.”

According to Sarawak Energy, cable theft is not only a criminal offence – it is also an extremely dangerous act as it can cause serious injuries, and even death from electrocution.
