Closing ‘tamu’ markets prevents large crowds from congregating – Miri MP

MIRI: The government’s move to close ‘tamu’ markets in the state is good as it stops large crowds from coming into close contact with one another during the current Covid-19 pandemic, said Miri MP Dr Michael Teo.

“Closing the tamu is correct as you don’t want people to come together and touch each other. To those who are out buying food at supermarkets, do remember to keep a distance from one another,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He was asked to comment on the closure of a number of the fresh produce markets in the state, with only a handful allowed to operate.

He also said the authorities need to monitor the few ‘tamu’ markets still open to ensure there is no overcrowding of people rushing to get their daily needs, as it would defeat the purpose of social distancing.

Meanwhile, Dr Teo said he has personally ordered 50,000 face masks for distribution and is expecting the shipment to arrive here by tomorrow at the latest.

He also called on the government to ensure adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) for front-liners, saying the lack of PPEs risks the lives of doctors and nurses treating Covid-19 patients.
