SIBU: Police have arrested a suspect and is looking for another in connection with the possession of firearms without permit and a mobile phone theft case that occurred at Bukit Lan on Friday.

District police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said items seized from the 20-year-old suspect, an Indonesian national, included a rifle, believed to be self-made and four cartridges.

“He has been remanded for 14 days until April 23 to help police in the investigation,” he said in a media statement yesterday.

He said the complainant was earlier sleeping in his vegetable farmhouse at Bukit Lan when he heard his neighbour scream  about 8.30pm Friday.

“The complainant rushed over to his neighbour and saw a man fleeing with a suitcase on his back, and holding what appeared to be a rifle-like object.”

He, together with three friends gave chase and managed to arrest the suspect.

However, in the process, the complainant discovered that his mobile phone was snatched by another man, believed to be a friend of the suspect who managed to escape from the scene.

Stanley said the arrested suspect also failed to produce a valid travel document, and would face four charges including Section 380 of the Penal Code for stealing, Section 8 (a) of the Arms Act and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963, and also for violating the movement control order (MCO).

He was also taken to Sibu Hospital for Covid-19 screening.
