SIBU: The Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) supports the reopening of schools in stages after the Movement Control Order (MCO) is lifted.

In a statement yesterday, STU president Macky Joseph pointed out that the school routine would no longer be the same post-MCO.

“If the examination classes are going back to school, those students who are still staying at home would have to continue their home-based learning and apply distance-learning from various platforms and media as they need to access their learning while teachers are ever ready to teach accordingly,” he said in response to Education director-general Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim’s television interview broadcast on Friday.

He stressed that discipline involving physical distance, safety, and good health, as well as distance-learning would be the new routines going forward.

“STU salutes Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim regarding the issue of prioritising safety and good health of pupils before going back to school,” he said, adding that the ministry was finalising the post-MCO school management guidelines.

“STU agrees that the new routine is the action among those who are concerned, while following the guidelines set by the ministry while at school, also to discipline oneself according to the guidelines concerned; for example, sanitising or washing hands, and observing physical distancing, be it within the school perimeters or going back home from school.

“Cleanliness is mandatory.”

He stressed that the new routine must be followed strictly.

“STU urges the government of the day to also cater to the urgent needs of the schools, including Internet accessibility and fast connection throughout the state of Sarawak too,” added Macky.
