Those jailed by the court for violating the MCO leave the court complex to begin their sentence at Puncak Borneo Prison.

KUCHING: A married couple was fined RM1,000 each in a Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for violating the Movement Control Order (MCO) by travelling more than 10km from their home without a valid reason.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar imposed the fine after the 54-year-old husband and his wife, 43, pleaded guilty to the charge. They paid the fine.

“After hearing arguments from all sides and taking into account the accused (husband) has diabetes, each will be fined RM1,000 or 10 days’ jail in default,” said the magistrate.

According to the charge sheet, the couple left their home at Bandar Baru Semariang to travel to Kampung Gita – a local infected area – on April 23 at 9.55am.

They were charged under Regulation 3(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) (No. 3) Regulations 2020.

Meanwhile, the court also passed sentence on 36 other individuals for violating the MCO, with most given seven days’ jail and fined RM1,000 in default 10 days’ jail.

Several of the accused, however, were only fined RM1,000 each in default 10 days’ jail as the court took into
account their old age and health issues.

DPP Danial Ilham Kamaruddin prosecuted while all the accused were not represented by counsel.
