The walkway of Kapit Express Terminal was submerged in water on Monday.

KAPIT: With the fine weather the past 24 hours since Monday, the high water level in Kapit began to subside gradually yesterday.

Flash floods rose the whole of Monday, with water level reaching its highest late in the afternoon, submerging the walkway of Kapit Express Terminal as well as the Kubu Jetty. The turbulent swift flowing water posed danger to small boats navigating along the Rajang River.

Each time, continuous heavy rainfall would trigger alarm to the people living in houses built on the hill slope for fear of landslide and mudflow.

Those in low-lying areas were affected by the flood.

The incessant heavy rainfall triggered landslide and mudflow on the hill slope at Nanga Seran, Batang Rajang affecting at least one detached house.

The mudflow and falling soil partially damaged the ground floor of the house belonging to the headman of a Tajung community, Tuai Rumah Bernabas.

Penghulu Lawrence Bandah who is the community leader of the Tajung community lodged a report on the landslide to the Kapit District Disaster Management Committee.

Kapit District Office administrative officer Robert Anyaw, Kapit welfare officer Dariel Thiong, Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) officer from Kapit Resident’s Office Kanchin Minggom and Penghulu Lawrence went over to check the extent of damage to the house.
