KUCHING: Muara Tuang assemblyman Dato Idris Buang has suggested for disinfection works to be carried out for three consecutive days prior to the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on May 11, in line with Covid-19 safety guidelines.

He also said those who are required to be at the august House for the one-day sitting must similarly be disinfected and wear face mask.

“The DUN sitting needs to proceed but with everyone adehering to full safety guidelines on Covid-19 and the relevant preventive measures.

“It seems that would be the most appropriate thing to do under the circumstances, even if just for a one-day sitting,” he said when contacted yesterday over the DUN sitting being held during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

He added that as a prerequisite for members, aides and DUN staff to enter the august House for the May 11 sitting, they need to be screened and tested for Covid-19.

On the coming sitting, Idris said he believed a period of one day was enough for some Bills to be passed.

“There is no need for prolonged and dragging debates, especially the political rhetoric of DAP among others,” he added.

Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong on Tuesday expressed concern over the DUN sitting being held during the MCO period in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

She felt it would be more appropriate for the DUN to utilise video conferencing in light of the current situation.

Yong’s suggestion, however, was dismissed by DUN Deputy Speaker Dato Gerawat Gala who pointed out that video conferencing was not allowed by virtue of the DUN Standing Orders and Sarawak Constitution.
