KUCHING: A virtual panel and sharing session on ‘Making It Happen! With Women Will’ organised recently by Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Sarikei Innovation Center (SiC) and Kuching-based iCube Innovation (iCube) received overwhelming response
including from viewers outside Sarawak.

The organisers in a statement said the virtual event, held in collaboration with Women Will by Google Business Group (GBG) Sarawak, received more than 1,800 video engagements whereby 70 per cent were from within Sarawak, 20 per cent from other states in Malaysia, and 10 per cent from outside the country.

They added the event streamed live on May 8 and was their first online event on Facebook.

“For those who did not have the chance to catch the event live, it can still be viewed at bit.ly/smasic-ww,” said the statement.

Question-and-answer time during the session by speaker Jamie Thoo.

The virtual panel session was moderated by Chapter Lead for Women Will Sarawak, Clara Liew, while the speakers comprised entrepreneurs and career women from Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

The speakers comprised Chapter Lead for Women Will George Town, Goh Shuan Thing who spoke on ‘Monetizing Your Passion’; Chapter Lead for Women Will Bangkok, Soma Som on ‘How To Create Your Own Path’; co-founder of Tanoti Sdn Bhd, Jacqueline Fong on ‘Bringing Value To The Table’; co-founder of Miri Artisan Market, Katrisha Lee on ‘The Common Ground That Takes You There’; director of Basic Harvest Consultancy Sdn Bhd, Jamie Thoo on ‘Chasing Your Dream Is Not A Fairy Tale’; founder and CEO of IQTeach, Priscilla Lawrence Avit on ‘Taking That First Leap Of Faith’; and Peatix Business Development Manager in Singapore, Yi Lin Koay on ‘The New Normal | From Offline To Online’.

In her post-event comments, Liew remarked it was an amazing experience altogether to take Women Will live online for the very first time.

“Without restrictions of geographical boundaries, we were able to bring many more empowering women from all around as guests to speak and share.

“Similarly, it allows us to reach out and inspire more women out there from behind our computers to theirs, wherever they are,” she said in the statement.

Priscilla meanwhile said she learned a lot from the women entrepreneurs while partaking in the session.

“I am able to relate to some of their experiences and stories, understanding their work and why they started their journey. This event awakens me to new possibilities by allowing me to transcend our ordinary experiences and limitations to the audience.

“When you talk or share knowledge to netizens, it is essential to bring that giving mindset versus taking mindset. I truly believe that inspiration propels a person from apathy to possibility, and transforms the way we perceive our own capabilities,” she said.

Thoo on the other hand said the event provided the opportunity for everyone involved to practise the ‘new normal’ by embracing technology during the current Covid-19 pandemic.

“If there’s a will, there’s a way. We made everything through online from scratch, and learned new ways to share and empower women through online. A totally new experience,” she said.
