SIBU: The state government’s RM1 flat rate stage bus fare for implementation in four major towns has received a thumbs-up from Sarawakians.

Deputy Youth chief of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Machan, Henry Jugah, said the initiative would improve the livelihood and quality of life of the people.

“The initiative is a fulfillment of the people’s need particularly those who are still relying on public transportation.

“It will assist the people’s movement from one place to another with cheap fare,” he said when contacted yesterday.

The initiative was announced by Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin in Miri on May 16.

A Dayak-based non-governmental organisation, Terabai Menua (Sibu branch) chief Robinson Corey also welcomed the initiative.

He said it showed that people’s need was given priority.

“The resumption of stage buses operation in the state is vital for those who are dependent on public transportation.

“Not everyone knows how to use e-hailing services especially senior citizens. For young people it may not be a problem,” he said.

He added the initiative would ease the burden of the lower income group.
