KUALA LUMPUR: National hammer thrower Jackie Wong is expected to be discharged soon after spending more than 70 days in the hospital for Covid-19.

The 28-year-old has been receiving treatment at the Sibu Hospital since March 16.

Malaysian Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced yesterday that all Covid-19 patients in the country would be discharged even if they still test positive after 14 days of hospital treatment.

He said this was based on the latest information issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and researches conducted by South Korea and Taiwan which showed that the level of infectivity of a Covid-19 patient was almost zero after 14 days.

“This information will change the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) SOP (standard operating procedure) and protocols in managing Covid-19 patients.

“The MOH will inform all hospital specialists of the new protocols that will be implemented, with Covid-19 patients to be treated for just 14 days,” Dr Noor Hisham said at the daily press conference.

The Sarikei-born athlete, who holds the national record of 68.22m, was the 2017 SEA Games champion.

Last year, he finished in the top eight at the Asian Championships and collected the silver at the SEA Games in Manila. — Bernama
