KUCHING: Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) has given its full support to a proposal for Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal to be the prime minister candidate of the opposition.

In a statement yesterday, PSB said that it is a fact that Malaysia was formed by a partnership of the Federated States of Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah as equal partners pursuant to an international treaty.

“It is time that due recognition be given to the equal partnership and that Sarawak and Sabah be allowed to nominate a person to be the Prime Minister.

“We support Shafie to be the next Prime Minister and that, thereafter, a Sarawakian be the Prime Minister in keeping with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 which recognises that Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah are equal partners,” it said.

PSB was responding to a statement by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday that he fully supported a proposal by Amanah, Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) and DAP to nominate Shafie as the prime minister candidate of the opposition.

PSB also called on the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government to support Mohd Shafie as next Prime Minister and to insist that Sarawak shall have the right to nominate the next Prime Minister after Mohd Shafie completes his term of office.

“We further call for amendment of the Malaysian Constitution to provide for rotation of the Prime Ministership between Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah.

“This is the dream of our forefathers when they entered as equal partners under Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) for the formation of Malaysia. The Prime Ministerial position for Sarawak and Sabah will be the realisation of the true spirit of equality between the partners who formed Malaysia,” it said.
