KUCHING: Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) fully supports the proposal made by former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal to be the opposition’s prime minister-designate.

In a statement issued on Saturday, PSB said it was time that due recognition be given to the equal partnership that formed the Federation of Malaysia, in that the two East Malaysian states be allowed to nominate a person to be the country’s prime minister.

“We support Shafie to be the next prime minister and that, thereafter, a Sarawakian be the prime minister in keeping with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), which recognises that Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah are equal partners,” it said in the statement.

PSB also called on the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS)-led state government to support Mohd Shafie as the next prime minister, and to insist that Sarawak would have the right to nominate the subsequent prime minister after Mohd Shafie completed his term of office.

“We further call for an amendment to the Malaysian Constitution to provide for rotation of the prime ministership between Malaya (Peninsular Malaysia), Sarawak and Sabah.

“This was the dream of our forefathers when they entered as equal partners under
MA63 for the formation of Malaysia.

“The prime ministerial position for Sarawak and Sabah would be the realisation of the true spirit of equality between the partners that formed Malaysia,” it said.
