TANJUNG MANIS: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a foreign fishing vessel Saturday for encroaching into Malaysian waters some 119 nautical miles off the north of Tanjung Sirik here.

MMEA state director First Admiral (Maritime) Robert Teh said all five Indonesian crew members, aged between 25 and 37, were arrested after they failed to produce valid travelling documents.

“They also have been instructed to undergo Covid-19 screening test. The case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 and Immigration Act 1959/63,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Teh said that the agency strives to improve security control and law enforcement operations in Sarawak waters to ensure vessels and boats comply with laws, as well as for safety measures.

He urged those with information on any suspicious activity in Sarawak waters to contact 999 or the MMEA Sarawak operations centre’s 24-hour hotline on 082-432544.
