KUALA LUMPUR: The candidate to be appointed as the new Dewan Rakyat Speaker has been identified, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) parliamentary chief whip Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof disclosed.

Without giving a name, Fadillah said that the candidate is not a Member of Parliament, and when asked whether the candidate is a Sarawakian, he just smiled.

“I’m not naming anyone, but what’s for sure is that the candidate is well qualified and a Malaysian,” he told a press conference after presenting Completion Contractor Certificates to 39 recipients here today.

Last Sunday, Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof confirmed he had received a motion to terminate him of his Dewan Rakyat Speaker post.

He said also received was a motion to terminate his deputy Nga Kor Ming from his post.

Fadillah, who is Senior Minister (Infrastructure Cluster) and also Works Minister, said GPS will support whatever decision made by the Perikatan Nasional federal government and is confident that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had a solid reason for moving the motion to remove Mohamad Ariff and Nga.

“So, we will second the motion, the candidate has been identified and we will see what transpires in Parliament come July 13,” he said.

On Sarawak state election, Fadillah said GPS is ready to face it anytime, but the date is still up to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to decide.

“For us in Sarawak, we don’t work for elections, we work for the people and we are ready to face the state election anytime,” he added. — Bernama
