KOTA SAMARAHAN: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) launched its anti-rabies campaign yesterday as it continues to curb the spread of this virus which had claimed the lives of 23 people in Sarawak since 2007.

Its chairman Dato Peter Minos said MPKS will work together with neighbouring Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) in this campaign to support the Sarawak government’s efforts in getting rid of rabies.

“The latest rabies victim was from Sibu, and it is very good that Sibu Municipal Council is reacting fast and speedily. We in the other councils are taking the cue and doing our part with advice from the Ministry of Local Government and Housing (MLGH),” he said.

Minos said actions to be taken during this campaign include catching the stray dogs in Samarahan and awareness programmes.

“Local councils are in the frontline in this anti-rabies war. This is a serious war, and we must win it. It is all so depressing especially now that we also have Covid-19 crisis.”

Also present at the launching ceremony yesterday morning were officials and councillors from MPKS and MPP, as well representatives from MLGH, Veterinary Services Department and the police.
