KUCHING: The Department of Minerals and Geoscience has been asked to conduct a geophysical study on the underground seepage of hot springs at Kampung Annah Rais, Jalan Puncak Borneo near Padawan here.

Puncak Borneo MP and Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Willie Mongin said the study should also include identifying hydrogeochemical properties in the hot springs area which is popular among foreign and local tourists.

“With this study, the hot springs zone can be better described to help preserve tourism products in the Puncak Borneo parliamentary constituency”, he said when met by Bernama recently.

He said soil test should also be conducted in the Puncak Borneo, Jalan Padawan, Jalan Link Padawan, and Jalan Semadang-Dahan Estate, in efforts to identify the causes of frequent landslides in the area.

“With this soil tests, areas which are prone to landslides can be identified and mitigation measures can be taken to prevent such incident from recurring”, he said.

Willie said the request for the study was conveyed to Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Ali Biju recently.

“This is important for the safety of road users in the Puncak Borneo parliamentary constituency”, he said.

Puncak Borneo is a popular tourist destination, especially for visitors who want to get to know the culture of the Bidayuh community in Sarawak.

Apart from the traditional villages of Annah Rais and Benuk, the Sungai Semadang is also equally popular for water sports and recreational activities.

Among international events held annually in the area include Padawan Raft Safari, Semadang International Tagang Festival, and the International International Country Music Festival. — Bernama
