Expired weighing scales: KPDNHEP issues three traders with RM100 compound each

A KPDNHEP Sarawak enforcement officer inspects the weighing scale at a fruit stall in the market.

KUCHING: Three wet market traders were slapped with a RM100 compound each during an inspection conducted by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) in Batu Kawah area last weekend.

According to a KPDNHEP Sarawak spokesperson, the operation was set up following complaints received from the public.

“The three traders were found to be using weighing scales that were long due for recalibration, as indicated by the expiry dates of their licences.”

“Usage of any weighing or measuring instrument of which its licence has expired is an offence under Section 14(6) of Weights and Measures Act 1972.

“To date, KPDNHEP Sarawak has recorded up to 205 cases under the Act, with total compounds issued amounting to RM28,700, and total items seized worth RM51,106,” said the spokesperson in a statement yesterday.

Consumers are advised to lodge complaints about unethical business practices via KPDNHEP hotline 1-800-886-800; E-aduan portal on http://e-aduan.kpdnhep.gov.my; by using WhatsApp messaging via 019-279 4317; or by going to the nearest KPDNHEP office.

“We would like to remind all traders to always be mindful of the licensing expiry dates of their weighing and measuring instruments, and also to have them recalibrated of which they can engage assistance from KPDNHEP Sarawak,” said the spokesperson.
