The decades-old Sungai Merah market will be given a facelift.

SIBU: Sungai Merah market here will be given a complete facelift, says Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) market and petty traders standing committee chairman councillor Albert Tiang.

He stated that the council has received a RM5 million ‘Projek Rakyat’ grant from the state government for the project which is estimated to exceed this amount.

Tiang explained that the first design was rejected as the State Building Design Committee recommended the council to take up the land behind the market, the present site of Tamu market as well.

“They wanted us to include the Tamu site to make the market bigger and increase the parking lots,” he said when contacted yesterday, adding that Tamu traders would trade inside the premises with permanent license in the future.

Tiang disclosed that the existing structure would be demolished and the new market with more stalls would be constructed in two phases.

“Preliminary design suggests a single-storey market at the front and double storey at the back for a food court and parking bays,” he added.
