MIRI: The Belukun village security  and development committee (JKKK) needs around RM800,000 to rebuild their 12-door longhouse at Long Selaan, Ulu Baram, which was completely destroyed in a fire on June 8.

It chairman Denis Wan said the JKKK has already opened a bank account at Public Bank to solicit financial support to rebuild the longhouse.

“Our longhouse is located at upper Baram, some 10 hours’ drive by four-wheel-drive vehicle from Miri.

“The road from Miri to Lapok town, which takes about two hours to reach, is tar-sealed. The remaining journey would be on logging road which makes the cost of transporting building materials
from Miri to the village very high,” he told the media when met at Long Selaan during the Kedaya Telang Usan Media Tourism Trip organised by Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) recently.

Denis, who is one of the fire victims, said the longhouse folks hoped for generous public support to assist them in rebuilding the longhouse.

“We really hope that we can get enough financial support so that we can rebuild the longhouse soon.”

At the moment, he together with other fire victims are temporarily staying at their relatives’ longhouse located nearby.

Some 60 residents of the longhouse were made homeless by the fire which occurred at around 11.07am.

Those who wish to contribute to the longhouse building fund can contact Denis at 012-8796713 or the headman Peter Tingang Lalo (012-8994209) for further information.
