SIBU: Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing Dr Annuar Rapaee describes the federal government’s move to make wearing of face masks compulsory in public places as a step in the right direction to curb the spread of Covid-19.

He said this is all the more important following a warning by World Health Organisation (WHO) about the airborne spread of this virus.

“There is emerging evidence that the virus can remain in the air for up to eight hours, necessitating for the use of face masks be made mandatory in all public places. This is a good move by the federal government (to make wearing of face masks compulsory in public places).

“Many countries have started this (measure to curb the spread of Covid-19). In fact, I have suggested on July 12 for the wearing of face masks to be made mandatory when in public places.

“I would like to repeat my advice to all outlets be it restaurants, coffeeshops or malls to bar entry of anyone not wearing face masks in their premises,” said Dr Annuar, who is also Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research and Nangka assemblyman.

“Those who can’t afford the masks can utilise self-made reusable masks.”

Dr Annuar said this yesterday when asked on Sarawak’s decision to follow the federal government’s decision to make the wearing of face masks compulsory in public places in the state effective Aug 1.
