Toilet facilities to be built on Canada Hill

MIRI: Toilet facilities are expected to be built on Canada Hill before the end of this year to cater to visitors and trekkers.

Assistant Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting said the Miri City Council (MCC) has approved the proposal and the next step would be to identify a suitable location, estimating the cost, and calling for tenders.

Ting (front fourth left), MCC personnel, and councillors are seen with trekkers for a photo call.

During an inspection of the site yesterday, Ting met with several avid trekkers, with whom he discussed a suitable location for the project.

“They are frequently there, so they will know the proper spot for toilets. So we will decide after discussion and the rest will be worked out by the MCC’s engineering department,” he said.

He revealed that funding for the project will come from his Rural Transformation Project (RTP) fund as Piasau assemblyman.

“We are expecting it to commence and to be completed this year, and surely we are keeping our fingers crossed,” said Ting.

The lack of toilet facilities has long been an issue at the popular trekking and tourist spot.

“This is very important because when humans have to go, and there aren’t any proper facilities in place, it will result in pollution and possibly health hazards due to improper disposal of human waste,” Ting added.

He also inspected the lighting system around the Petroleum Museum.

“The view from the top of the hill is amazing. However, without proper lighting to light up the area, it is quite dark and risky to be here in the evening.

“It is hoped that by improving the lighting system, it could attract more visitors here,” he said.
