MIRI: Selangau MP Baru Bian has welcomed the assurance given by Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof that the government will continue with the proposed Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) project.

Baru, who was Works Minister during the Pakatan Harapan administration, said he looked forward to the commencement and completion of the much-awaited project.

“As we all know, this alignment is very necessary now after the people in Limbang and Lawas pleaded for a road that bypasses Brunei.

“So I look forward to its commencement and completion,” he said when contacted yesterday for comment on Fadillah’s winding-up speech in Parliament on Monday, in which the latter said the SSLR project would be given priority together with the Pan Borneo Highway project above all else in Sarawak.

The SSLR project was launched by Baru at Long Sebangang/Bukit Berikau in November last year.

The project is divided into two packages – Package 1 covering 90km from Lawas through Long Sukang, then to Long Luping and to Pa Berunut, where works are expected to begin in October this year and completed by 2024.

Package 2 involves 160km from Pa Berunut to Long Lama, along with 170km of spur roads.

SSLR will be the first road connecting Sarawak and Sabah without passing through Brunei.
